The partnership between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren originated in the mid-1990s in the form of an engine supply deal in Formula 1. This collaboration was undoubtedly a success, with McLaren claiming one Constructors’ World Championship and three Drivers’ titles before the two manufacturers parted ways for 2015. The venture also prospered beyond the racetrack when, in 2003, the two companies crafted a supercar—McLaren’s first venture into road vehicles since its iconic F1.
Making use of Mercedes-Benz’s contemporary design language and the advanced engineering at McLaren’s Woking factory, the SLR was born. With massive power from the Mercedes-Benz-built 5.4-litre supercharged V-8, the flagship boasted a 208 mph top speed. Yet this was still a thoroughly usable grand tourer, with the front-mid engine layout that enhanced chassis balance also allowing for a spacious cabin and commodious boot.
In 2006, Mercedes-Benz introduced the 722 Edition—named in deference to the number emblazoned on the side of the 300 SLR that Stirling Moss drove to an utterly commanding victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia. With over 300 modified components, the 722 Edition was a true upgrade. Power rose from 617 to 641 horsepower, which dropped the 0 to 60 time to 3.6 seconds. The ride height was lowered by 10 millimetres, 19-inch light-alloy wheels were fitted to house larger brake discs, and a new front splitter increased downforce. As for the interior, suede and carbon-fibre replaced much of the leather and aluminium trim to give a sportier feel. Only 150 of these incredible machines were ever built.
The 722 Edition offered here was delivered in April 2007 to Abu Dhabi, finished in Crystal Antimon Grey Metallic over a Black and Anthracite Exclusive leather interior. The SLR has been sparingly driven and accordingly shows only 11,441 kilometres at the time of cataloguing. Among the most exclusive supercars of the modern era, one that blends blistering performance with true long-legged comfort, this SLR 722 Edition is most certainly worthy of joining any distinguished collection.
