Over the years, many of Land Rover’s most celebrated models have served as the foundation for bespoke reinterpretations that far exceed the scope of the original engineering brief. While the Defender has frequently been the subject of extensive modification by specialists, the Range Rover—both in its classic and contemporary forms—has similarly attracted the attention of high-end custom builders.
Renowned for its work on Mercedes-Benz models, Chris Hahn’s Styling Garage—also known as SGS—in Relligen, Germany catered to an elite clientele, offering tailormade vehicles with virtually limitless customization. From gold-plated finishes to comprehensive structural conversions, the company fulfilled even the most ambitious requests. Hahn’s customer base included royal families, international celebrities, prominent athletes, and global dignitaries.
The vehicle presented here exemplifies Styling Garage’s extraordinary capabilities in design, engineering, and execution. Said to have been commissioned in secrecy for Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei, it stands as a singular expression of bespoke automotive craftsmanship—unmatched in specification, vision, and exclusivity.
Using a U.S.-market standard-wheelbase Type-P38A Range Rover 4.0 SE as a starting point, Styling Garage transformed the SUV into a convertible coupe by reengineered numerous components. The front doors were lengthened by several inches and mounted with frameless windows, while the rear cabin bulkhead was reinforced to compensate for the removal of the roof structure.
A particularly unique design feature, distinguishing this Styling Garage conversion from other aftermarket Range Rover conversions, is the belt line. Instead of cutting straight across the top of the door and into the rear bodywork, Hahn’s team developed a step-upped design that subtly drops the belt line down into the redesigned doors and then back up into the revamped rear bodywork. The design is so cleverly executed that the car’s wheelbase appears to have been shortened, even though it was not. To complete the conversion, Styling Garage retrimmed the interior with white leather and a flourish of burlwood trim.
Said to have been delivered new in June 1995 to the Bolkiah royal family’s personal garage beneath the Beverly Hills Hotel, this Styling Garage Range Rover convertible conversion was reportedly acquired by a California resident in 1999. Now presented with fewer than 16,400 miles at cataloguing time, it presents a special opportunity for collectors seeking a truly unique custom purpose-built for any occasion and suitable for any environment—namely cruising in style across California or any other sunny locale.
