Aston Martin and Zagato rekindled their partnership to celebrate modern coachbuilding with the creation of the Vanquish Zagato Coupe concept, which was first shown to the world at Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como in May 2016. Three months later, the two historic companies unveiled an open-top counterpart, the stunning Volante, at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
Production was limited to just 99 cars, with the number “nine” a recurrent feature in the Italian design house’s history. Founded in Milan on 19 April 1919 by Ugo Zagato, only 19 examples of its first venture with Aston Martin, the revered DB4GT Zagato, were built.
The redesigned Vanquishes gained a new front grille and rear vent meshes detailed with three-dimensional “Z” motifs, while the LED taillights were given a similar treatment to the track-only Aston Martin Vulcan, thanks to the adoption of a blade-like design. Meanwhile, twin-cowls on the rear deck lid concealed a bespoke folding roof.
This Vanquish Zagato Volante is number 1 of 99 produced and one of only a dozen or so allocated to the United States. Registered to its first owner in New York, it showed only 2,516 miles on the odometer at cataloguing time.
Exceptionally well-specified, the order form features over $50,000 in options, with $40,000 of the total accounting for unique equipment exclusively available through the Q by Aston Martin Program. Orient Blue coats the handsome exterior and complements the sumptuous Centenary Saddle Tan leather interior. Walnut trim, special seats, and a One-77 sourced steering wheel comprise just a handful of the many Q options found in the cabin. Already a striking sight to behold in stock form, the many bespoke elements combine to create a magnificently attractive Vanquish Zagato Volante.
Acquired by its current owner in 2022, an invoice on file confirms the Aston Martin received a five-year service and general inspection in July 2023. At this time, the car was filled with fresh oil, coolant, and brake fluid, the motor that deploys the rear spoiler was serviced, and the spark plugs, purge control solenoid, and audio amplifier were replaced.
Rare even among Aston Martin’s already exclusive standard production models, this well-optioned, low-mileage Vanquish Zagato Volante blends British performance and engineering with masterful Italian design, successfully evoking the iconic DB4GT Zagato while creating a totally unique contemporary icon for a new era.
