Opening its doors in 1973 on the Spanish island of Ibiza, Pacha would develop into one of the most prominent venues in the Ibiza and global clubbing scene. The 1970s welcomed a boom in visitors and by the 1980s the rave scene bolstered the island’s reputation for late-night parties led by the most acclaimed DJs. In the 1990s, Balearic house was emerging and top clubs such as Pacha Ibiza were able to attract prominent DJs including José Padilla, David Morales, Pete Tong, and many more. Pacha is often considered the “Mecca” of Ibiza clubs and is self-proclaimed as ‘The World’s Most Iconic Nightclub’. In the 1990s Pacha became a true institution, still loved and adored by many to this very day.
During the early 1990s, Pacha Ibiza sourced this 1966 Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi and fully customised it for promotional and DJ use. The factory sunroof model was painted in the club’s iconic cream and cherry red colour scheme, the front badge was replaced with the Pacha “cherry” logo, and the interior was trimmed in matching two-tone vinyl. The doors featured a 1990s “Max Power”-style speaker set-up, with TVs installed in both front doors and the side-doors. Inside, by the bench is a retractable TV and a full DJ set-up, with provisions at the back for sleeping included. The VW bus was reputably driven around the island to promote the club during the day and at night returned to the club for various sets to be played by house DJ Mr P in addition to various other famous DJs such as Pete Tong. So popular was the bus that Pacha created VW bus merchandise for clubbers to purchase, including bags and even a piggy bank, which accompany the car today!
Purchased by Mr P directly from the Pacha nightclub, the bus was imported to the UK in 2007 and had Burnt Orange Customs carry out a restoration to both return it to its former glory and, most importantly, technologically upgrade it so it could continue DJ use. The unique features were retained such as the Pacha “cherry” logos still adorn the door cards, steering wheel centre, and front of the Volkswagen. Blaupunkt speakers were installed in the door cards and two amplifiers fitted at the back of the vehicle. Up front, two Pioneer turntables were fitted as well as a Pioneer mixer all to the spec of the restoration period.
This Pacha Ibiza Collection VW Type 2 is truly one of a kind and represents period provenance from the peak of 1990s Ibiza club culture. Sure to attract widespread attention, this is the ultimate machine for any collector’s garage or venue looking for an automotive piece with a deep musical connection.
