The A6 series, which owed its name to Maserati brother Alfieri and the model’s inline-six powerplant developed by Gioacchino Colombo of Ferrari V-12 fame, was the marque’s first post-war sports car offering. Although production started in 1947, it took until the 1954 Paris Auto Show for the ultimate iteration to arrive in the form of the A6G/54. Only 60 examples were built, and just a third of those received the glamorous Allemano grand tourer body style.

Of those 21 cars, chassis number 2175 offered here was completed on 9 August 1956 ahead of being delivered new to Mr Catullo Del Monte of Rome. The Maserati had been exported to the United States come 1958 and, around the late-1980s, was bought by marque enthusiast Joe Alphabet of Los Angeles. He owned another A6G/54, chassis number 2186, and transplanted this car’s twin-cam engine into the sister Zagato body before selling 2175 without a motor.

In 1996, this example would move from the United States to Italy under the custodianship of the consigning owner. Paired with 2186’s engine, it was submitted for a full restoration. Thanks to the guidance of Maserati historian Walter Bäumer, in 2008 chassis 2175 was reunited with its matching-numbers inline-six, which it retains to this day. The car also presents with cream paintwork over an interior trimmed with black upholstery featuring cream piping and a cream dashboard panel.

Seldom seen and possessing a sporting edge, the Maserati A6G/54 is among the most desirable of 1950s Italian automotive creations. This example, bodied by Allemano and featuring its matching-numbers engine, is sure to appeal to connoisseurs.

La serie A6, che deve il suo nome a uno dei fratelli Maserati, Alfieri, e al motore sei cilindri in linea ideato da Gioachino Colombo, famoso per aver sviluppato un V-12 Ferrari, è stata la prima auto sportiva proposta dal marchio nel secondo dopoguerra. Sebbene la produzione sia iniziata nel 1947, si dovette attendere fino al Salone dell’Auto di Parigi del 1954 perché arrivasse l’ultima variante, la A6G/54. Furono realizzati solamente 60 esemplari, di cui appena un terzo poté sfoggiare l’affascinante carrozzeria in stile Granturismo creata da Allemano.

Di queste 21 auto, quella con numero di telaio 2175 qui proposta fu ultimata il 9 agosto 1956 e consegnata nuova al signor Catullo Del Monte di Roma. La Maserati fu esportata negli Stati Uniti nel 1958 e, verso la fine degli anni ’80, fu acquistata dall’appassionato del marchio Joe Alphabet di Los Angeles. Alphabet aveva un’altra A6G/54, numero di telaio 2186, e trasferì il propulsore bialbero di questa vettura nella sorella carrozzata da Zagato prima di vendere la 2175 senza motore.

Nel 1996, questo esemplare tornò in Italia sotto la proprietà del conferente. Fu sottoposta a un restauro completo e dotata del motore della vettura 2186. Grazie alla guida dello storico Maserati Walter Bäumer, nel 2008 la 2175 fu riunita al sei cilindri in linea originale, che conserva ancora oggi. L’auto è inoltre verniciata in una tonalità crema su interni rivestiti in nero con bordini e pannello del cruscotto color crema.

Esposta sporadicamente e dotata di un animo spiccatamente sportivo, la Maserati A6G/54 è tra le più ambite creazioni automobilistiche italiane degli anni ’50. Questo esemplare carrozzato da Allemano e dotato di motore originale eserciterà il suo fascino sui veri intenditori del marchio.
