Some of the most entertaining automobiles in motoring history have been the maddest ideas. To wit, the Lamborghini LM002, a beefy, Hummer-style sport utility vehicle with sharp-edged industrial styling, equipped with a Countach-sourced 450-horsepower V-12 fed from a 45-gallon fuel tank, delivering its power through a five-speed manual gearbox and two-speed transfer case to wheels shod in massive Pirelli run-flat tires. It could climb over anything imaginable, while carrying four passengers in bucket seats wrapped in fine leather and surrounded by glossy wood veneer trim.

Unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show of 1986, the LM002 set faces agog, and in the next nine years would sell 328 copies. Today it is considered—and rightfully so—to be a pioneer of the ultra-luxury sport utility vehicle, the kind that is now the bread-and-butter for most European manufacturers. It remains a powerful machine and its utter charisma has never quite been equaled.

The example offered here, finished in Olive Green over Crème interior, was reportedly originally purchased by Donahue Wildman, founder of Bally Total Fitness, and in his ownership carried Utah registration “ALAMB0.” Following his passing in 2018, it was acquired from his estate by the second owner, who undertook considerable freshening, including a cosmetic restoration and mechanical sorting by marque specialists Fast Cars of Redono Beach, California, with invoices on file in excess of $90,000.

Angus Mitchell owned a green LM002 in his teenage years and had missed the car ever since. This example, a similar color to the one he owned decades ago, served as the ideal base for Angus to build his dream LM002. Despite the interior being well preserved, he decided to replace the entire interior with new carpeting, headliner, and leather to meet his exacting specifications. A modern sound system was installed, and all wood veneers were removed and refinished. In keeping with its owner’s well-honed eye for style, a set of custom Miura-inspired wheels were machined by EVOD Industries for the truck. As he put it, “new shoes, to keep the design language flowing within the family.” Please note that the original steel wheels and a bottle of iconic Paul Mitchell shampoo are included with the sale.

A wonderful example of the “Rambo Lambo,” this much-loved car is sure to be the center of attention wherever it ventures—over hill, dale, or Rodeo Drive.
